On April 14, 2009, Aruna Sairam was presented India's Civilian Award - The Padmashri Award. The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil handed over this award to Aruna Sairam in recognition of her musical contribution to Indian classical music. The award ceremony was held in New Delhi at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's residence, in the presence of several dignitaries.
