Carnatica and Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha will honour five tambura artistes as part of the 10th edition of Bharat Sangeet Utsav, which will get under way at Narada Gana Sabha on Friday.

Addressing presspersons, managing trustee of Carnatica Archival Centre for Music and Dance and Carnatic musician K.N. Shashikiran said leading Carnatic vocalist Aruna Sairam will perform on November 2 to raise funds for the artistes.

“Since tambura artistes are not very well paid, we will be presenting them with cash awards, and are also contemplating providing funds for medical expenses if necessary,” said Madhva Muni Rao of Rasikas.org.

The 10-day utsav will feature 33 performances including the inaugural concert by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna and Kaushiki Chakrabarty. This will be followed by a special performance by the Dhananjayans with Sikkil Gurucharan (vocal) and Anil Srinivasan (keys).

Sudha Ragunathan will present a ‘Bhakthi Symphony’ with jazz percussionist Mark Stone. T.V. Gopalakrishnan will team up with saxophone player George Brooks, while O.S. Arun will present a jugalbandhi with Ronu Mazumdar. Young stars will also perform at the festival.

Secretary of Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, M. Krishnamoorthy said that an interactive mini kutchery, the ‘20/20 Carnatic Premier League’, will be held on November 2, with performances by Aswath Narayanan, Apoorva, Anahitha and S. J. Jananiy, among others.

The utsav features veterans of the Carnatic world, including T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Sanjay Subrahmanyam, O.S. Arun, P. Unnikrishnan, the Malladi brothers, Vijay Siva, Gayathri Venkatraghavan, Priya sisters and Abhishek Raghuram.

Though the concerts are ticketed, with the maximum price being Rs. 500, free and low-cost seats will also be available for rasikas.
